The sun was out, the skies were blue, and the roads were clear on the afternoon of November 15th as 32 Detroit Mercy dental students cruised west along I-94 towards Chicago, Il. They were headed towards the most anticipated event of the year, ASDA’s National Leadership Conference.
The hotel was buzzing with dental students from across the nation getting ready for a weekend of learning about dentistry, networking with sponsors and employers, participating in activities, socializing with other students, and more. For many of the Detroit Mercy attendees, it would be their first time attending and excitement was high as the conference kicked off with a keynote speaker and a wide range of breakout sessions.
Speakers from across the nation had traveled into the windy city to discuss topics in Leadership Fundamentals, Advocacy, ASDA Chapter Management, Personal Development and Wellness and Career Planning. The presentations and discussions seek to build well-rounded leaders in the dental world.
A highlight for the Detroit Mercy ASDA chapter was the IgniteDDS breakout session hosted by Jason Watts and David Rice. Here, President Adam Hadsell and Vice-President Mandee Kaur accepted the $3000 IgniteDDS grant the chapter had won for outstanding community service and outreach. The video submission, created by Anthony Laszlo and Samer Jasser, can be viewed on our Instagram page (@detroit.mercy.asda).
Beyond the daytime educational activities, the national leaders had planned many social activities for students to participate in as well. The first night, students boarded a boat on the Navy Pier sponsored by MedPro. Hundreds of conference attendees shared appetizers and drinks, captured photos of the skyline and danced the night away on the multi-level boat. The second night, our chapters’ students suited up for the Pacific Dental sponsored 007-themed social. The night ended at Social 25 where students and sponsors flooded the bar to keep the party going.
At the end of the weekend, our students packed their bags, checked out of their hotel rooms and headed down to their cars. They were headed back to Detroit, armed with more knowledge, more connections and more inspiration as future leaders in the world of dentistry. Until next year, Chicago!
