DETROIT MERCY ASDA
The American Student Dental Association is a national, student-run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests, and welfare of students pursuing careers in dentistry. It introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, representation and advocacy. ASDA provides the students a venue through which their concerns about dentistry as a profession can be voiced.
Our chapter is made up of 575 members including students from the Class of 2019 up to 2022.
We believe that outreach is a key component to building and strengthening a community. Our students work year-round on multi-faceted outreach initiatives that seek to better the lives of Detroiters across all demographics. From encouraging healthy lifestyle habits through nutrition counseling to promoting good oral hygiene practices through providing free toothbrushes, toothpaste and information, our students are working towards improving the quality of health of Detroit locals.
We believe in the importance of forming healthy habits at a young age – that’s why, once a month, we go to local elementary schools and engage students from kindergarten all the up to high school. We do activities like spotting healthy snacks versus unhealthy snacks, demo-ing brushing and flossing techniques, colouring activities and dental bingo. Our students also visit nursing and retirement homes around Detroit to provide elderly patients with information on denture care, when and how to seek dental services, and more.
Once a year, Detroit Mercy participates in Men’s Health Day. Each September, we gather at Ford Field to provide a variety of services including oral cancer screenings and tobacco cessation counseling to hundreds of patients. This is our biggest event of the year with hundreds of patients being served in a single day by our dedicated team of staff, students and professors. Over the next year, we hope to increase our outreach team’s presence around Detroit by targeting more schools, nursing homes, community health fairs and local events. If you'd like to get involved or set up an event with our chapter, please feel free to reach out on our Contact page!
